If you are stuck

Locked out of your own website?

No passwords, no access, and whoever built it has stopped replying. This is one of the most common things we get called about — and it is almost always fixable.

First, the reassuring part

Your domain name is registered to a person or a business, and there is a formal process for proving that is you. Your website files exist somewhere, and hosting companies have recovery procedures. Neither of these depends on the original developer being cooperative — or even contactable.

What matters most is the domain. Everything else can be rebuilt; the domain is the one thing that is genuinely hard to replace, and it is the thing to secure first.

What to gather before you call

  • Your web address, exactly as people type it.
  • Any email that mentions renewals, hosting or domains — search your inbox for the domain name.
  • Card statements showing a recurring charge you cannot identify. That is often the hosting.
  • The name of whoever built it, and roughly when.
  • Any logins you do have, even ones you think are wrong.

If you have none of that, call anyway. We have started from less.

What we do

  • Work out who currently controls the domain and the hosting, from public records.
  • Walk you through the recovery process with the registrar — it is your domain, and there is a path to proving it.
  • Get a copy of your existing site so nothing is lost while this is sorted out.
  • Move everything into accounts in your name, so this cannot happen again.

Then what?

Sometimes the old site is fine once you can actually update it. Often it is the moment to replace something that was already tired. Either is a legitimate answer, and we will tell you which one we think you are looking at rather than pushing you toward the bigger job.

One thing not to do

Do not let the renewal lapse while you are working it out. An expired domain can be bought by someone else, and getting it back after that ranges from expensive to impossible. If a renewal is due, pay it — even to a provider you are unhappy with — and untangle ownership afterwards.
